Homemade Chai Tea Blend

September 15, 2010

Chai, being the Hindi word for tea, is a popular beverage in India and most of South and Southeast Asia. It is a soothing warming spicy beverage that is served with cream/milk and sweetener (honey, sugar or sugar substitute, if preferable), which greatly enhances the flavor of the spices. The most familiar forms of chai that I’ve seen here in the states has been in the form of chai latte concentrates from such companies as Oregon and Tazo. While this may work for some, I tend to be a bit of a purist when it comes to what I consume. Making your own chai from scratch has a certain feel to it. This is a simple recipe on how to make your own chai tea blend at home. Combining herbs and spices with your favorite black tea leaf (English Breakfast suggested) are a few of the basic building blocks for a comforting cup of chai. Enjoy!

Allspice, Black Peppercorn, Cardamom, Clove, Cinnamon, English Breakfast, Ginger, Nutmeg, White Peppercorns

Mortar & Pestel or Coffee grinder
-if using a coffee grinder, make sure it is cleaned thoroughly. To clean quickly, try grinding up some saltine crackers. The crackers and salt will actually clean out any residual coffee in the grinder. Even better, have two grinders, one for coffee and one for spices and herbs.

Tea pot with built in tea infuser or stand alone tea infuser or strainer
Stovetop tea kettle or electric tea kettle

3 White Peppercorns
3 dry Allspice berries
3 Black Peppercorns
3 whole Cardamom pods
3 whole Cloves
1/3 teaspoon of ground Ginger
1/3 teaspoon of ground Cinnamon
1/3 teaspoon of ground Nutmeg
2 tsp of English Breakfast tea leaves (always 2 tsp of leaves for each cup of tea)

With a mortar & pestel grind all whole spices first until nicely pulverized. Next add the ground spices and mix together. Finally add English Breakfast tea leaves to ground spices and mix until leaves and spices are evenly distributed. Place chai blend in your infuser or strainer. Pour boiling water over the chai blend and let steep for 3-5 mins. Pour and serve with cream/milk and your favorite sweetener. The flavor is intoxicating. Enjoy!
